Some important dates in September and October

September

I have another business trip in September that I couldn’t decline. This unfortunately means we will have to cancel the following class dates:

  • Sunday 21st September
  • Thursday 25th September

I will hold classes on Friday 26th September instead:

  • Juniors (all grades) from 18:00 to 18:45
  • Adults and cadets from 18:50 to 20:00

Grading dates and details

I was planning the next grading on September the 21st. However, this will now be held on the 28th for Juniors and Cadets. Adult grading will be held 5th October. Please note that students who wish to take their grading should continue to train during September. The higher-grade students should be training as much as possible, building their fitness and skills. If anyone needs advice, I am happy to have a call and discuss.

Grading times will be as follows:

  • Adults 5th Oct: 10:00-12:00
  • Junior and Peewees 28th Sep: 16:30-17:30
  • Cadets and advenced Juniors 28th Sep: 17:30-19:30

I want to take this chance to remind everyone about the grading requirements.

To pass your grading you must perform all the required techniques and fitness exercises specified by the EGKA.

Syllabus – EGKA

Students should also perform techniques specified by Goju-Ryu Karate Milton Keynes.

Where the syllabus specifies a “good” kata, the kata must be performed without mistakes. A wrong turn or a technique of the wrong side will result in failure. Continuous poor-quality techniques such as not performing correct stances will result in failure. Katas must be performed with powerful, quick and slow movements as they are taught in the class.

To prepare students will be expected to practice at home to achieve the required performance. You should remember or take notes in the class when I am teaching the techniques and kata. You may need to practice specific parts of the kata repeatedly until you correct any mistakes.

Who can attempt a grading?

Students must have trained for the required time specified in the syllabus and must have attended classes regularly – anyone satisfying this requirement may attempt their grading. It is up to the student to judge if they are confident in achieving the techniques outlined in the syllabus. However, if anyone is not sure please feel free to contact me to discuss.

Students who don’t wish to attempt their grading but wish to attend for the training, please let me know in advance.

October

We will hold a competition in Shenley Leisure Centre on the 14th October. I hope everyone can take part. Please register using the link below.  We are encouraging competitors to register ASAP so we can guage numbers.

Irikumi open 2025 – Goju-Ryu Karate Milton Keynes

This is an open championship for all ages, grades and styles. Note that the kata must be within the Goju system. That is because the event is organised by Goju karate instructors, and we may not know kata from other systems. Karate students from other styles are welcome to perform Goju kata and/or take part in the irikumi (continuous sparring) events. Shenley Leisure Centre, Shenley Church End, Milton Keynes, MK5 6HF, Saturday October 18th, Start time 11:00… Read More »
